500 meters under the sea

In April 2022, a team of New Zealand scientists discovered a huge marine ecosystem in Antarctica. While drilling, these researchers discovered, more than 500 meters deep under the ice, a colony of amphipods, animals similar to shrimp. This discovery is incredible because very few expeditions are led at this depth. As a reminder, Antarctica is an ocean that is 98% covered in ice, with an average thickness of nearly 2 kilometers.
