The Lac du Der-Chantecoq (Der-Chantecoq Lake) spreads out its 48 km² in the humid Champagne region. Surrounded by forests, some of which are marshy, it offers all the food and environment necessary for migratory birds such as the Common Cranes (Grus grus). Insects, larvae, small rodents and amphibians abound, as well as seeds and cereals from neighbouring fields. Hornbeam, hazel and oak trees are very present (cranes love acorns). The humid Champagne extends over three departments: Aube, Marne and Haute-Marne.
