The Sedan Castle is situated on a promontory on the banks of the Meuse river. Built from 1424 onwards by Lord Evrard II de La Marck, it was enlarged and reinforced over the centuries. The “Giant” of Sedan is the largest medieval fortress in Europe, with its 35,000 m² spread over seven floors. In 1642, the last Prince of Sedan, Frédéric-Maurice de La Tour d'Auvergne, gave the principality to King Louis XIII. Transferred by the French army to the municipality of Sedan in 1962, the castle was restored and transformed into a municipal museum.
