27 military cemeteries

With 27 military cemeteries scattered throughout Normandy, the American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer is undoubtedly the best known and the most impressive. It brings together the graves of 9,387 soldiers who died in combat. On June 6, 1944 at dawn, the largest landing in history began. 6,939 ships landed 132,700 Americans and 20,000 vehicles on the beaches of Normandy called Juno, Gold, Sword Utah and Omaha. These young men aged 20 to 23 will face a formidable deluge of fire and show extraordinary courage. The endless alignment of Italian white marble crosses gives way to meditation and awe near this Omaha beach called 'the bloody'.
