Napoleon Museum for 12 years

In 1802, the First Consul Bonaparte granted statutes to the new Muséum Central des Arts (Central Museum of Arts). At the same time, he appointed Dominique Vivant Denon director of the museum, which now covers the ‘Galerie d’Apollon’, the ‘Salon Carré’ and the ‘Grande Galerie’. In 1803, the museum was renamed Musée Napoléon. With the return of the Monarchy, Louis XVIII and Charles X successively commissioned new paintings. Those of Charles Meynier and Merry-Joseph Blondel, presented at the Salon of 1819, adorned the grand staircase of the museum (then the Percier and Fontaine room) and the ceiling of the vestibule of the Gallery of Apollo.
