The Sun, dear to the young Louis XIV, is the main theme of the Gallery of Apollo in the Louvre Palace. The painter Le Brun placed the Greek god of the arts at the centre of the composition, then represented the different phases of day and night. The gilded medallions evoke the seasons and mythology is present everywhere. In 1715, at the death of Louis XIV, all the stucco decorations were finished but not the paintings, the Versailles construction site having monopolised all the artists and the king’s attention. The Gallery of Apollo was finally completed during the Second Empire.
