The vault of the Louvre’s Gallery of Apollo astonishes with its mix of paintings and sculpted stucco groups. The poses and expressions are innovative. If the art of the century of Louis XIV has been described as pompous, the Gallery of Apollo is a fine example of pure French classicism. The four sculptors, François Girardon (1628-1715), Gaspard Marsy (1624-1681), Balthazar Marsy (1628-1674) and Thomas Regnaudin (1622-1706), each showed a personal temperament beyond the limits of the exercise. The Gallery of Apollo prefigured the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, built twenty years later.
