The paintings on the ceiling of the Louvre’s Salle Denon pay tribute to the artistic achievements of three French kings and an emperor. Behind Louis IX (Saint Louis), the construction sites of the cathedral basilica of Saint-Denis and the Sainte-Chapelle can be identified. Behind Napoleon I are the triumphal arch of the Carrousel, the Vendôme column, and the façade of the National Assembly. François I shows the Château de Chambord, Louis XIV the Château de Versailles and the Hôpital-Hospice des Invalides. The paintings are by Charles-Louis Müller (1815-1892).
