The dome of the Salon Denon is divided into four lunettes painted by Charles-Louis Müller during the Second Empire. The paintings are dedicated to the French sovereigns who most supported artistic creation. The emperor and the three kings honoured are depicted in the company of the outstanding figures of their reigns. For example, Louis IX (Saint Louis) inspects the plans of the great cathedral builders and François I is shown with Leonardo da Vinci. Writers (Beaumarchais, Chateaubriand), architects (Fontaine, Lamandé) and painters (David, Guérin) can be found around Napoleon I. Louis XIV rubs shoulders with Le Brun, Le Vau and Colbert among others.
