Located on the east side of the Cour Napoléon, the Sully Pavilion of the Louvre Museum provides access to the Cour Carrée. Formerly known as the Pavillon de l’Horloge (Clock Pavilion), it is an important work begun under Henry IV and completed under Louis XIII. The monumental and elegant pavilion built by the architect Jacques Lemercier at the beginning of the 17th century was to serve as a model for Louis Visconti, Napoleon III’s architect, for the six 19th century pavilions. Visconti reproduced, in particular, the high chimneys and the large caryatid figures that frame the upper windows.
