In 1905, the industrialist Jules Goüin bought the Royaumont Abbey. At the beginning of the First World War, his son Edouard offered the premises to the French Red Cross. From 1915 to 1919, the abbey housed auxiliary hospital no. 301, run by a team of female doctors, nurses, care assistants and drivers, all members of the Scottish Suffragists’ Federation. The abandoned abbey had only one water point, but the Scottish Ladies of Royaumont knew how to do everything. Within a month, the hospital was ready to operate. The Scottish Women’s Hospital at Royaumont, the largest volunteer hospital in France, treated nearly 10,861 wounded, most of them French.
