The first private cultural foundation in France

Royaumont Abbey was founded by Saint Louis in the 13th century and was occupied by monks until the French Revolution. Destroyed in 1792, the church was never rebuilt, and the new owner, the Marquis de Travanet, installed a spinning mill and built new canals in the park. In the second half of the 19th century, the nuns of the Sainte-Famille de Bordeaux brought the abbey back to life. They created tree-lined paths in the park and a cave, still visible today. The Goüin family became the site's owner at the start of the 20th century. Henry and Isabel Goüin created the Royaumont foundation in 1964, the first private foundation with a cultural vocation in France.
