The final resting place of the royal children

On the death of his brother Philippe-Dagobert (1222-1233), King Louis IX decided to choose Royaumont Abbey as the burial ground for the children of the royal family. After his brother, three of his four children who died before him were buried in Royaumont. Blanche (1240-1243), Jean (1248), and Louis (1244-1260). The tombstone of the 16-year-old heir to the throne shows King Henri III of England carrying the deceased. The tomb of Louis, which was sacked in 1793, was reconstructed in the cathedral basilica of Saint-Denis in 1816. As for Jean Tristan (1250-1270), he died in Carthage a few days before his father, and he would not be laid to rest at Royaumont.
