200 fishing outings a year

Professional fishing in Marseille is mainly artisanal and based on polyvalent activities (nets, pots, longlines, seines, etc.). It involves around 250 fishermen, including the small fisheries of less than 24 hours (marine cultures, shellfish farming), coastal fishing, offshore fishing, and large-scale fishing. Fishermen go out 200 times a year on average, many of them for short trips of one and a half to five hours in fishing areas mainly located within the three nautical mile strip. They are still organized into fishing corporations set up ten centuries ago in Marseille to manage the trade and its dwindling resources.
