In the 18th century, the Upper Castle of Villarceaux was considered a country house and hunting lodge. Situated at the top of a plateau, it can be seen from the garden. To its right was once the French-style garden. All that remains is the wonderful path down to the pond below, which alternates between stone steps and grass, and which is tended by sheep. In her “Letters”, Madame de Sévigné tells us that in the afternoon, guests would go down into the gardens through a bower. Sometimes musicians played around the pond and it was possible to go around in a boat.
