The Joan of Arc of the Sacré-Cœur

In front of the facade of the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, two bronze equestrian statues seem ready to take up the fight. Installed at the Sacré-Coeur in 1927, they are the work of the sculptor Hippolyte Lefèbvre (1863-1935), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1892, and gold medallist at the 1900 World Fair. They represent Saint Louis on the west side and Joan of Arc on the east side (photo). With a severe face, Joan raises her sword high to drive the English out of France. She is wearing her armour and her helmet is raised. If Saint Louis represents justice, Joan of Arc symbolises holiness.
