The Hôtel National des Invalides has been watching over wounded and elderly soldiers since King Louis XIV. Its dome, gilded with fine gold, lights up like a watchtower at night and shines in the sun during the day. It is one of the most important monuments in Paris. The tomb of Napoleon I, which it houses, contributes to its aura among visitors. But for the majority of Parisians, it is the symbol of the French nation and its armies. The ceremonies of national tributes held there always attract a respectful crowd, if allowed to attend, as its Cour d’Honneur is aptly named.
