The Dôme’s royal chapel

0
The tomb of Napoleon I is located under the Dôme des Invalides, in in the extension of the nave of the Saint-Louis des Invalides cathedral. In the 17th century, the chapel of the Dôme was reserved for King Louis XIV and his family, while the church of Saint-Louis was for the soldiers. The king and the soldiers attended the same masses, separated only by the choir of the church. A series of banners, taken from enemies over the centuries, hang under the vault. The church officially became the cathedral of the diocese of the French Armed Forces in 1986, and despite the separation of Church and State, French flags are flown around the altar.
