On the outside, the dome of the Invalides displays a great wealth of decoration. On the lead plates of the roof, the ribs, the ornaments and the lantern are all gilded with gold leaf. This small square pavilion is decorated at the top with four statues representing Justice, Prudence, Temperance, and Strength. Thrown down during the Revolution to melt down cannons, they were put back in place in 1989. The lantern is surmounted by a tapered obelisk ending in a cross. The Dôme church was inaugurated on 28 August 1706 by Louis XIV, thirty-five years after the laying of the foundation stone of the Hôtel Royal des Invalides.
