The art installation “East-West/West-East” by the American sculptor Richard Serra consists of four steel plates, each about 49 feet (15 metres) high: the two outer ones are 55 feet (16,76 metres) high and the two inner ones 48 feet (14,63 metres). These plates are lined up in the Brouq Nature Reserve in Qatar and form an in-situ work. During his career, the famous American sculptor first tried his hand at painting in the 1960s before working in a steel mill to finance his studies. His fascination with steel found an artistic purpose after his discovery of Giacometti’s work. In 1969, he turned to corten steel, a special steel to which phosphorus, copper, chromium, and nickel were added. The corten alloy is designed to develop a rusty-looking oxide surface layer spontaneously when stored outdoors. The 4-inch-thick corten steel plates that make up “East-West/West-East” were manufactured in Germany using industrial processes and transported in 2014 to Qatar.
