Connected to the mainland by a granite pier, the Gatteville lighthouse signals the strong and dangerous currents of the Raz Blanchard in a 9 miles (15 km) strait. Some 11,000 blocks of pink granite from the nearby town of Fermanville were necessary to build this 245 ft (74.85 m) lighthouse. The 7,400 tons were raised without any scaffolding by more than 1,000 workers. Today, the Gatteville lighthouse is the second tallest in Europe. In 1980, Jean-Jacques Beneix used the site for some scenes of his movie Diva.
