Why was the Taj Mahal built?

Built between 1631 and 1648, the Taj Mahal was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. On June 16, 1631, his wife died giving birth to their child. The emperor then decides to build a palace in honor of his late wife. The Taj Mahal is a white marble funerary mausoleum. It is considered the greatest architectural gem of Indo-Islamic art.
