What is the origin of the word Arctic?

The word arctic comes from arktos in greek, which means bear. But polar bears have nothing to do with this name. The ones in the sky do: the Great Bear and the Small Bear, that are only visible from the Northern hemisphere, are at the origins of arktos. Therefore, Antarctica was named as the anti-Arctic, where you cannot see the constellations. Photo credit: Ben Thouard / The Explorers
