Whale songs could help map the oceans

The song of whales is very powerful. So powerful that it causes seismic waves. These waves cross the oceanic crust which reflects and refracts them. By analyzing these waves, geophysicists from Oregon State University (United States) were able to determine the thickness and nature of the ocean layers. The whales' songs could thus be the solution to a less invasive and more natural exploration of the oceanic crust. Photo credit: Abigail Lynn
