The okapi has long been the subject of legends. Few people believed in its existence, it was nicknamed the African unicorn. It was not until 1901 that the species was internationally recognized following the discovery of skin and bones by British zoologists. Endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo (Central Africa), the okapi is a giraffid that is threatened with extinction due to poaching and the loss of its natural habitat.
