Wangari Maathai, the "mother of trees"

In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai has dedicated her life to protecting the environment in her country. In 1977, she created a movement to plant trees across the country. This initiative was adopted by the UN and allowed the planting of 11 billion trees around the world. Wangari Maathai died in 2011 but his NGO Green Belt Movement continues to work today. Photo credit: Oregon State University
