Vjosa, European national park
1
0
It becomes the first river to obtain the status of “national park” in Europe. The Vjosa is a river in southern Europe, it originates in Greece, crosses Albania from east to west, and empties into the Adriatic Sea. On March 15, 2023, the Albanian government granted it the status of a national park. The Vjosa is one of the last wild rivers on the continent, that is to say, that it is not subject to any human exploitation. The river basin is home to unique biodiversity: the Balkan lynx and other endemic insect species. This protection responds to the threats of hydroelectric power plant projects that weighed on the conservation of the river.
