The Celebes macaque (Macaca nigra) is a species renowned for its great photogenicity. This primate is endemic to the island of Celebes, an Indonesian island located east of Borneo (Southeast Asia). Its amber-colored eyes, its dark black coat and its hairs which stand up in the shape of a crest on the top of its skull, make the species unique. Mainly vegetarian, the Celebes macaque can occasionally eat snails. Unfortunately, it is among the list of the 25 most endangered primates. The species is highly threatened by poaching and domestication.
