In 1781, Uranus was the first planet to be discovered with a telescope. Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, and Mars were enough bright to be easily visible. In 1820, 39 years later after Uranus was discovered, the first expedition in Antarctica was led and proved its existence. Photo credit: Angelo Abear
