An ultra-absorbent plumage!

It is the only bird in the world to be able to do this. The pin-tailed sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata) can absorb and transport water on several kilometers. This ability is possible thanks to the bird's ultra-absorbent ventral feathers. The pin-tailed sandgrouse is a bird that lives in arid and semi-arid areas of the world. It immerses its feathers in a water point, carries up to 40 ml of water, flies about twenty kilometers and waters its chicks in the nest. This biological peculiarity was revealed for the first time in 1896 by the English ornithologist Edmund Meade-Waldo.
