River navigation, shipping, and oil and gas exploration have a sound impact on marine life. In the Pacific Ocean, a dramatic increase in ocean noise has dramatically reduced the ability of blue whales to interact with each other, reducing the distance they can communicate by 90%. The international organization IFAW is fighting to institute new standards in order to reduce noise pollution at sea and thus preserve the living conditions of species.
