The Panama canal

Its construction was one of the most challenging engineering projects ever undertaken. It took 10 years to complete. Inaugurated in 1914, the Panama Canal crosses the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. 77 kilometers long and equipped with 6 locks, it links the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, and then to the Atlantic Ocean. This means that ships traveling from one coast of America to the other can avoid a detour of thousands of kilometers via Cape Horn in South America. With a depth of between 12.5 and 13.7 m, the canal is used by some 13,000 ships a year, and can accommodate vessels of all sizes, from private yachts to large commercial vessels.
