The Notting Hill Carnival is one of the biggest street parties in Europe. It takes place every year in London on the last weekend of August. The origins of the carnival date back to 1958, when Trinidadian activist Claudia Jones attempted to bring together the Caribbean community in response to race riots in London's Notting Hill district. The first official Carnival was held in 1966. The hugely popular Notting Hill Carnival welcomes around a million visitors every year. It offers an opportunity to celebrate to the rhythm of West Indian music such as calypso, samba, reggae, ragga and soca, a blend of soul and calypso from Trinidad.
