EN: In the Alpes de Haute Provence, in the south of France, lies an impressive stone massif over 100 metres high. The Pénitents rocks have been sculpted by erosion from a rock composed of a thick layer of naturally cemented pebbles. Scientists call them "pudding". Their appearance evokes a procession of hooded penitents. Legend has it that monks from the Montagne de Lure were petrified for daring to look too closely at some young, undressed women bathing in the Durance.
