Only an hour from Paris, the Fontainebleau forest is a unique forest area in France. It is a reservoir of biodiversity, with some 5,000 plant species and 6,600 animal species. Along with the forest, the Château de Fontainebleau is the main attraction of the area. Formerly an imperial forest, the estate was prized by the kings of France for their hunting and flying parties. The château has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
