The Atacama Desert in Chile (South America) is known to be the world driest desert. It also is nicknamed the flowered desert. Every 5 to 7 years, heavy rainfall due to El Niño (a seasonal coastal current) can appear and bring the region back to life. Thus, in a few months, 200 species of flowers emerge from this usually arid soil. Photo credit: Diego Garcia
