It is capable of delivering a discharge of 860 volts (the natural world record). Its nickname: the freshwater taser. Native to Brazil, the fearsome Volta electric eel (Electrophorus voltai) uses electric shocks to defend itself, communicate or move around. It has also been used for research into neurodegenerative diseases and, more recently, hydrogen fuel cells for medical devices such as pacemakers and implantable sensors.
