The giant squid (Architeuthis dux) has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom. Its eye measures 270 millimeters in diameter. For comparison, the average basketball measures 248 millimeters. The giant squid lives in the abyss of the Southern Ocean (Antarctica), between 300 and 1,000 meters deep. The animal's giant eyes allow it to spot its prey but also its predators from more than 120 meters away.
