In the 1980s, 1,776 hectares of mangrove forest surrounded Tanakeke Island, Indonesia (Southeast Asia). Following the introduction of aquaculture and shrimp and fish farming, the island lost more than 70% of its mangroves. Aquaculture has proven to be unsustainable and for some years a program to safeguard the mangroves has been underway. Environmental organizations and the country's authorities have decided on a twenty-year action plan: the restoration of 70 hectares and the protection of 1,000 hectares.
