The great gray owl (Strix nebulosa) is a great hunter. It is able to spot voles, these small herbivorous rodents, which can burrow up to 50 centimeters under the snow! According to a latest study published in the British scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society, the great gray owl has sensors that allow it to hear ultrasound. Its preys are betrayed by the sound of the movements they make in the snow... to the delight of the owl!
