What is hibernation ?

Hibernation is one of the different cold hardiness processes. It is a state of regulated hypothermia, which lasts several days or weeks and allows animals to conserve their energy during winter. They slow down their metabolism to very low levels. They do this by gradually lowering their body temperature as well as their breathing rate. This process will tap into the body's fat stores that have been stored during months of activity. Photo credit: Michael Himbeault
