Queen of the night

Selenicereus cactus, nicknamed Queen of the night, owes its name to Selene, the moon goddess in Greek mythology. In late spring or early summer, it produces abundant yellowish flowers that open in the evening and last for just one night, giving off a vanilla fragrance. It is said to have been a favourite of Queen Marie-Antoinette, who had it painted in front of the court and royal family by Pierre-Joseph Redouté.
