Along with the Christmas tree, the mistletoe is one of the symbols of Christmas. This plant with white berries is actually a parasite. Mistletoe feeds on the sap of trees. It develops because of birds which, during their digestion, scatter seeds all over the place. Despite its parasite status, mistletoe is known for its medicinal benefits and was once used to treat whooping cough. Photo credit: Matt Seymour
