Native to tropical and subtropical Africa, Sphaerocoris annulus, commonly known as the picasso bug, is a species of curly-backed bug belonging to the Scutelleridae family. Picasso bugs generally have oval, flattened bodies, with variable coloration, often dominated by shades of brown, green or red. The mosaic markings are not a tribute to Pablo Picasso, but serve as a warning to predators, as part of a phenomenon known as "aposematism". Aposematism is a defense mechanism that has evolved to warn potential predators that the organism they are considering eating is toxic, indigestible or dangerous.
