Why do cypress trees resist bushfires?

A cypress takes seven times longer to burn than a pine tree. The secret is not in its wood but in its leaves. These are kinds of scales that allow the tree to retain a lot of water, even when the air is dry. Water beats fire. This biological specificity motivated the creation of the European CypFire project which aims to limit forest fires in the Mediterranean by planting cypress trees.
