Critically endangered, the saiga antelope is doing much better in Kazakhstan! The saiga is a species of Eurasian antelope that lives in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Threatened by intensive poaching, the saiga antelope is coveted for its horns which are used in traditional Chinese medicine. In the 1990s, the country was home to only 50,000 individuals. An aerial inventory carried out last April counted 1,318,000 antelopes this time! Since 2001, the animal has enjoyed national protection. This ban on hunting the species is in force in the country until 2023. Case to follow.
