In Lopburi, Thailand, monkeys are king. All year round, these macaques roam freely around the city. They are considered sacred and hunting them is strictly forbidden. With fewer tourists visiting during the coronavirus pandemic, the starving primates have spiraled out of control. In three years, their population has doubled: 6,000 macaques now live alongside the 27,000 inhabitants. They have invaded adjacent streets, attacking passers-by and jumping on cars. The former Lopburi cinema has become an open-air cemetery, where the monkeys deposit the bodies of their fellow monkeys and jealously defend it.
