The world population of whale sharks has dropped by 50% in the past 75 years. To counter this trend, the Australian scientist Brad Norman has been working for more than twenty years to protect the species. In the late 1990s, he discovered that the constellations of white dots on the bodies of whale sharks are unique to each animal. He launched a global mapping operation, today more than 13,000 animals are recalled. Recently, it has developed a satellite beacon technology that allows it to locate them, to know where to reveal the breeding areas and thus to sanctuarize certain maritime areas to protect the species.
