The yellow-legged antechinus, also known as the Mardo by the Noongar people of South-Western Australia, is the smallest carnivorous marsupial living in Australia. Males exhibit a rare reproductive strategy known as semelparous, suffering fatal immune system collapse shortly after their first—and last—mating season. Some suggest that male die-off benefits offspring and their mother by reducing competition for food.
