There are believed to be nearly a billion but remain largely unknown. Every day, marine viruses kill 40% of bacteria in the oceans. These biological entities play a determining role in the balance of marine ecosystems. On a daily basis, they trap large amounts of carbon. Taken together, marine viruses are said to contain more carbon atoms than 75 million blue whales!
